He climbed up 4 steps before the heat of the flames forced him to come down 10 steps.
Some minutes later, he climb 14 steps to the very top of the ladder.
How many steps did the ladder have?

Fireman is standing at the center of a ladder
First he Climbs up 4 steps so he is now at X+4 and when he goes down 10 steps so he is at X-6. Then fireman goes up 14 steps so he is now at X+8
8 steps from the top, 8 steps from the bottom, and the middle step 8+8+1=17
