Your first thought may be to add eggs, which is 12 but 12 is not the correct answer. Answer lies in the wording, read the each line carefully, first line “If I had four eggs” which is completely hypothetical situation, and roosters do not lay eggs. So only 3 eggs left which thief gave you. So, correct answer is 3, hope it clears everything.
